World Championships 2008 - Well done to all those who took part at the 2008 championships. The weather was great, the racing close. FMGPC results - Mens A 10th, Mens B 61st, Ladies A 29th, Ladies JB 43rd, C-Gulls 60th. There were 109 mens crews 106 ladies crews recorded, an amazing turnout to this amazing event. Well done to the Mens winners Mounts Bay and to the Ladies winners Falmouth.

Mens final, 1/2 way down the run on the way to their top 10 finish!

(pic thanks to Mounts Bay Gig Club)

Mounts Bay saw an almost carbon copy of wind, weather and sea conditions to last year. A full event report to follow but results from memory as follows (in race order, around 22 gigs competed ) : MA - 3rd, MB - 7th, LB - 3rd, JRs - 2nd, Vets - ?

3 Rivers Race : First race of the season was on 16-Mar, the 3 Rivers Race hosted by Caradon Gig Club. Well done to all crews who took part in the blustery and long river row starting and finishing under the Tamar bridges. We took two ladies crews and one mens crew. With so many crews taking part (30 ladies, 35 mens), racing was started with one heat following the other after a minute or so.

Ladies (A and "C-Gulls") were first off and both put in excellent performances finishing 8th and 16th respectively out of 30 crews. The C-Gulls were comfortably the fastest crew from the 2nd heat to start and overhauled 5 or 6 from the heat in front. Ladies A completed the course in 55:19, C-Gulls in 59:50. Places 5,6,7 and 8 were less than 60 secs apart after nearly an hours racing!

Mens A were our only mens crew to go and finished an excellent 6th from 35 crews just 6 seconds behind a strong Caradon crew in Mary Newman. Following a slightly dodgy start, the guys powered up the first leg and overtook 6 boats, nearly passing Mary Newman but ran out of room approaching the first turns and tucked in behind to take a better line into the marks. It remained nip and tuck for the next 30 minutes and a strong finish held off Speedwell (5secs) and Pilgrim (7secs). Overall time 48:30 - over a minute faster than last year over the same course.

A great start to the season, some really tight racing and should make for some excellent spectacles in the coming season. All crews can now look forward to putting their months of hard winter training into practice in the upcoming World Championships.

:: MPM 2007 :: Muiden-Pampus-Muiden

We attended the MPM event in Holland again this year. It's a series of 3 long (~40min) races from the Dutch village of Muiden, around the historic fort of Pampus and back to Muiden. 12 gigs took part alongside 100+ other rowing craft including 12 man lifeboats, sloops and whalers.

It's quite an event and last year we won the "Spirit of MPM" trophy. This year though, we won the mens gig trophy and had great performances from all rowers, both on and "off" the water. An amazing weekend and huge thanks have to go out to the organisers and towers especially Marianne and David, Bridget and Pete, Clare and Pete.

Ladies 1 (Pinnacle) : 5th (time 2h 12m 31s)
Ladies 2 (Penarrow) : 8th (time 2h 19m 15s)
Mens 1   (Pinnacle) : 1st (time 1h 53m 57s)
Mens 2   (Penarrow) : 9th (time 2h 09m 09s)

This weekend (13/14th Oct 07), some of the Juniors crew were involved in a Rowing Camp at Stithinas Reservoir.

The weekend went extremely well and we all (including coaches) learnt different ways of rowing and how to improve our rowing. We not only rowed gigs but also Virus boats, Flash boats, Skiffs and ergo's!!

The weekend was organised by the ARA and was excellent!

We Were joined by Juniors from Torridge, Appledore, Mounts Bay, Cadgwith, Zennor and Padstow.

Thanks goes to Clair Jenkin for organising us, Andy and Hillary Blake for coming and getting involved and to other club members for coming and seeing what we were upto!

:: Newquay Mens ::

MensA 2007 most improved crew shieldAnother fantastic weekend was had in Newquay!! Saturday saw fantastic warm weather but unfortunately Sunday was a bit more 'Cornish' and the rain fell!!

With the heats sorted the crews could not wait to get out onto the water but the tide's were wrong meaning they all had to wait so they umpire boat could come free from the sand at the bottom of the harbour.

First from our club up were the fantastic Men A. With a mix of A and B crews in this race they had a good chance of winning and did coming first! Next was the mens B and C crew in the same race! Both crews did extremely well but unfortunately I cant remember the posisitioning's!!

That was the first round over with so now onto the second! Going through was Mens A and B.

Both crews had fantatsic races both unfortunately only the the Mens A went through to the quarters on Sunday.

Sunday dawned and the rain was falling once more! But still we set up camp on the beach and watched the kids play and have fun in the rain! The Mens A prepared their boat and got onto the water. The guys had another fantastic race finishing fourth and went through to the semi's on their time.

Their next race was the hardest!! With our Men up against some of the top Men from team's such as Caradon, Roseland and Par. They had an impressive race but finished 6th.

Overall winners were Caradon 1st with Par 2nd and Falmouth A 3rd
F&MPGC Mens A - 10th
F&MPGC Mens B - 37th
F&MPGC Mens c - 60th

We all went back to the Seven Stars Flushing but there was still one more suprise to come!
As the awards were being presented there was a shield for "The most improved crew", unknown to us it was to go to the Mens A! Luckily, Penny Chuter was still present, brought the shield back to Mylor and gave it to Alice, who brought it down to Flushing to suprise all the crew!

Well done to all three crews and i believe everyone had a fantastic weekend and once more we were the loudest club!!

cheers all
Danny

Flushing & Mylor entered three ladies crews and one junior crew.

Clubs do not take their own boats to the event and gigs included in this years draw were Fly, William Peters, Ann Glanville Fear Not, Royal, Dasher, Helford, Energetic, Rose, Catalina, Azook and Sowenna.

With 75 crews taking part this year, draws took place the week before for the first round, with Ladies B first up in the fourth heat, rowing Azook. With each heat timed, the ladies came 5th with a time of 16.05, ensuring them a place in round two.

Ladies B were kitted out for the Championships by the Royal Standard Public House in Flushing John Ball, Cox of the Ladies B said they were both pleased and proud to be supported by the local establishment and thanked Cathy, Sue and Roger for their overwhelming support of the crew.

Next up in Ann Glanville were the Ladies A they finished in 16.12, also getting them into round two.

By the time of Ladies C heat, the wind had freshened and the sea picked up they completed their heat in Helford in 17.47 sadly not a fast enough time to get them through.

With a continued increase in wind and sea, second rounds were drawn and Ladies A finished their round in 18.37, with Ladies B in the following heat, this time rowing Catalina they finished in 20.02.  This left Ladies A to go through on Sunday morning to the quarterfinals, where they finished 5th in their heat.

Overall provisional results for the ladies were A in 19th, B in =35th and C in 54th.

The Juniors had their turn on Sunday and managed to get through the first heat racing against Truro, Penryn, Salcombe, Par and Calstock. Despite a huge effort from this up and coming crew, they did not progress to the next round (racing against crews twice their size and bearing beards!) but finished a fantastic 11th out of the 24 crews racing.

Flushing & Mylor Pilot Gig Club were invited for the second year running, to join in the Fancy Dress Fun Racing at Flushing Sailing Club on Saturday 4th August.

First off were the working boats, making a spectacular sight in the Harbour as they turned off Flushing Sailing Club Quay and back out to Carrick Roads.

The finish off Flushing Quay enabled a fantastic and colourful spectacle.

In the Gig Racing, the gauntlet was thrown down this year by F&MPGCs Junior Crew, rowing Pinnacle they took on Ladies B (with a token man!) in Penarrow.

Starting off the Eastern Arm, the Juniors were given a 40 second head start and were determined to win the race this year.  and they did, in style with Ladies B  finishing just 20 seconds behind them at Flushing Quay to rapturous applause.

The Juniors were over the moon to have won their second trophy in two weeks and also went away with the honour of the Gig Crew in the Best Fancy Dress  watch out next year guys!

FMPGC Regatta...Sunday 29th July at Kiln Quay, Flushing.

Local gig clubs including Falmouth, Truro, Devoran, Helford and St Agnes had accepted an invite to join Flushing & Mylor to celebrate the end of Flushing Regatta Week, providing a colourful spectacle of eight Cornish Pilot Gigs.

At last, after what seems a never ending period of unsettled weather, Sunday provided a day of sunshine, flat water and light winds.

With gigs assembling on Kiln Quay Beach, the course this year was set for maximum spectatorship with the start off Trefusis point, heading out to West Narrows with a turn back to Mylor and a finish back off Kiln Quay Beach.

First off were the Veterans with seven gigs partaking Penarrow fielded the Mens Vets from the Club with Pinnacle sporting a mix and match crew Winners, with a very strong team were Merthen from Helford.

Next off, Ladies A and again steaming ahead was Merthen from Helford. Flushing & Mylor ladies put in a very strong race coming fourth behind two Falmouth crews

Ladies B saw two Flushing & Mylor Crews partaking (the LB and LC). Ladies B has a great race crossing the line in third place behind Devoran in 1st and Falmouth in 2nd. This was the first time this particular crew had raced together and were very excited at having done so well. Ladies C crossed the line in 6th place.

Juniors today included the under 14 and under 16, both of which were won by Helford Crews

The highlight of the day the racing SuperVets with Flushing & Mylor providing both mens and ladies crews ranging from their 60s to 83!, it was a battle of the sexes the ladies took to Pinnacle whilst the men strode out in Penarrow as husbands and wives battled a straight course in the F&M boats, the clear winners were Falmouth, closely followed by Devoran and Helford. In the F&M battle the men crossed the line in 4th with the ladies a close 5th.

The Mens races next showed the F&M certainly are climbing up the ranks, with fantastic races, both the Mens A and Mens B took first place in their respective races, certainly crews to look out for at future events.  Mens C also competed in the Mens B race, coming 6th over the line in front of Falmouth and St Agnes crews.

Finally, the mixed race, won again by Helford, who also came 2nd F&M came 6th.
Trophies were presented by Peter Visick, a strong supporter of the Club, who additionally presented a trophy in memory of his late sister. The Jacquey Visick Cp was presented to the junior crew who showed the best determination and spirit this year going to Flushing & Mylor Juniors. Overall trophy went to Helford for the second year running.
