Flushing & Mylor Pilot Gig Club has an active Junior section, for children who are interested in taking up rowing. At the end of 2010, we were awarded a grant of £10,000 from Sport England to buy more equipment for our Junior rowers. Gig rowing is a family-friendly sport and our club includes many families of rowers, from primary school age up to grandparents in their 80′s!
When you have learned the basic rowing skills, we encourage you to take part in races if you want to. Several regattas are held from March till October, where Juniors are put in races for those under 14 and those under 16.
Recently we acquired the use of a flashboat and a skiff which are smaller and lighter boats to row in. They are ideal for rowers of all ages to learn in and are very good for those too young to hold a gig oar.
Full membership details are at the bottom of this page, but you get 4 free ‘trial’ sessions to see if you like it before you have to pay anything.
November to March
There are 2 junior sessions on Saturday afternoons (sometimes a break in January and February). For those in Year 9 and above at Secondary school we recommend coming to our 12.30 session. For those in Year 8 or below, please come along at 2pm.

2 junior sessions on Thursdays from 16:00 till 18:00.
Please contact one of our Junior co-ordinators before coming along to your first session.

As we have to put the gig in the water, it’s important to have as many hands as possible so help from parents/carers is much appreciated!
We take Health & Safety seriously. FMPGC coxswains have passed a RYA Basic Navigation and Safety course and if involved with junior coxing, are CRB checked. We also ensure that there is an extra adult in the gig during the junior training sessions. Life jackets will be provided.
The Flushing & Mylor Pilot Gig Club is a member of the Cornish Pilot Gig Association (www.cpga.co.uk ) that governs the sport and provides standards, rules and policies for clubs. CPGA membership enables us to take part in racing events throughout the year. We adhere to the CPGA Code of Conduct. We’re also affiliated with the Cornwall Rowing Association (CRA).

Once you are a member, you will be given the password that will enable you to sign up on the FMPGC website : www.fmpgc.org (click on “timetable” at the top, then click on “online-book a row” and go to the appropriate date and time by using the arrows and strolling down, click on add your name , fill in your name & tel.nr if new, your email address and click “send in your booking”.
If you are not a member yet or do not have access to a computer, then let Lynn or Marinane know and they will be happy to put your name down.
If the weather does not allow a junior rowing session to take place safely, then I will cancel it either the evening before or the following morning before 09:00 am. You will be informed by email and by writing this on the sign-up slot on the FMPGC website.
You are entitled to 4 free rows once you have completed the membership form.
Annual membership is from January till December and £30 for a junior (in 2013). If you join at any other time of year the subscription is calculated prorata from the month of application. For example an application submitted in June would be subject to 7/12ths of the annual fee, an October application 3/12ths. Pro-rata subscriptions are paid at the time of joining. This will be a one off discount. If a members subscription lapses they will not be entitled to this discount again unless it is due to exceptional circumstance and at the discretion of the committee.
